DISK_PAK for UNIX

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

UNIX file systems truly do fragment

File systems fragment throughout your daily operations. Every time a file is created, deleted, or changed, portions of that file may scatter across the file system.

DISK_PAK for UNIX optimizes the file system,

  • putting all elements of each file together;
  • grouping available space; and
  • clustering heavily accessed files.
Each of these steps allows the read/write heads to access data quicker. Since moving the heads is the most time-consuming activity when accessing your file systems, DISK_PAK for UNIX provides peak system responsiveness.

A tried and true defragmenter

Defragmenting file systems with DISK_PAK provides you with a number of measurable benefits. In addition to the new features in Rev 3.03, DISK_PAK:

  • Defragments the file system in place without operator assistance
  • Reduces user complaints due to slow system response
  • Makes UNIX data caching more efficient
  • Has several user-selectable parameters, providing a truly "customized" optimization of each file system
  • Suppots RAID disk subsystems and third-party drives
  • Operates with interactive or non-interactive (batch) execution
  • Supports X11 or character-based terminals
DISK_PAK fixes access and space fragmentation which dumping and reloading cannot! Access fragmentation is when two heavily accessed files are placed at different locations on the file system. Space fragmentation is cause when available space scattered throughout the file system.

New with Rev. 3.03!

Major enhancements have been added to Rev. 3.03 of DISK_PAK for UNIX, DISK_PAK:

  • has a new user interface with the look and feel of OSF/Motif
  • can do multiple scans and organizes simultaneously
  • reads system configuration files to identify existing file systems that can be organized, reducing system administrator preparation
  • matches device names with file system names, listing file systems by device name and their associated mount points
  • allows scans and organizes to be interrupted during any phase of the organization
  • has output file options to let users save and print different phases of the file system organization process
  • lets system administrators specify locations and priorities of selected files. Files can be designated as:
    • frequent files - the most frequently accessed files;
    • archive files - least or rarely accessed files;
    • transient files - files that are temporary or will soon be deleted;
    • static files - files DISK_PAK will not move

Seeing is believing

You may obtain a Disk Fragmentation Analysis Kit from EAGLE that contains read-only software which illustrates the degree of fragmentation on your system. We recommend using this analysis tool frequently, tracking how quickly fragmentation occurs. You don't have to unmount your file system to run the scan. The analysis software reports statistics on available space, degree of fragmentation, and number of contiguous directories and files in each file system. Click on the link and try it for FREE!

Safe and secure

Each new revision of DISK_PAK for UNIX goes through extensive testing by the EAGLE technical staff. EAGLE has even gone so far as to literally pull the plug when our file system is organizing, and not one piece of data was lost. At any given time during optimization, there are actually two copies of the information DISK_PAK is working on, so if the power dies or some other physical problem occurs within your system, your data will be safe.
